What Paperwork do you need?

It is highly recommended that you join a club and become a member of the United Kingdom Rocketry Association (UKRA), before you fly any rockets. UKRA membership also provides you with insurance.

If you plan on only flying Model rocket motors A-D class then you probably won’t require any paperwork.

If you plan on flying mid power, and some small high powered motors, then you will probably only require to have an RCA.

If you wish to fly larger K motors and above, then you will probably need a full Explosives License and RCA.

1. Insurance

2. Explosives License

3. Recipient Competent Authority Transfer Document (RCA)

4. Registered Store Certificate

1. Insurance

Membership of the UKRA provides you with third party insurance in case of an accident involving your rocket and someone else’s person or property. You are not covered for injuries to yourself.

2. Explosives License

You will need an explosives license if you wish to store a motor with a 1kg or more of net propellant or you wish to store over 5kg of net propellant of rocket motors. This document is also required if you wish to store Black Powder.
There are 2 types of Explosive License, an "Acquire and Keep" and an "Acquire only".

The "Acquire Only" type will only allow you to purchase a motor at an event. You will not be able to remove it from the event and store it off the premises.

The "Acquire and Keep" allows you purchase motors and store them offsite at your house or maybe an alternative premises. The Explosives license entitles you to store up to a maximum of 20kg of explosives. If you wish to store more than 20kg then you will require a Registered Store Certificate and safe distances will apply.

The price of the Explosive License varies from county to county and it depends on your local Firearms officers. Some counties are free of charge.

You apply for your Explosive License, on form COER 1A; available from the police, when completed it must be sent to your Local Firearms Officer.

3. Recipient Competent Authority Transfer Document (RCA)

The RCA is issued by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is currently free of charge. You require this document to transport the explosives on the road between the address on the RCA and Launch meets, events or registered stores.

4. Registered Store Certificate

This document is required if you wish to store more than 20kg of explosives.  This is only really required if you are selling engines or you wish to keep a large amount of them.
Again the price for a registered store certificate will vary from county to county and depends on your local Firearms officer. Again in some counties it is free of charge.
